2 Easy to do Tips for Winter Wellness

During the winter months, strengthening the immune system becomes a focus for many people. Our immune system does more than just help our body against the common cold and flu, it also helps to protect our body from outside invaders such as bacteria, viruses, toxins and forms part of our anti-cancer response.

A healthy immune system recognizes the difference between your body’s cells and alien cells allowing it to destroy any that could be potentially harmful.

Our body’s first line of defense is its physical barriers.  So, as we have been told over and over, adhere to good hygiene practices. Wash your hands regularly and avoid touching your mouth, eyes and nose.

Feeling unwell is no fun and its often not until you’re sick that you appreciate how good being well feels.

Here are two tips for keeping well through winter that you can implenent now:

Detoxify + Elimination pathways:

Elimination pathways are important for removing unwanted substances from the body. Supporting your liver is the first step. All substances go (via the gut) before they can be directed out of the body.  The liver is the key organ responsible for helping our body to process and prepare these substances for elimination.  Substances that if allowed to accumulate, could be harmful to us.  This is the process of detoxification and it goes on inside all of us every single day.

Liver Detoxification pathways need key nutrients to function so dietary choices can influence how efficiently each phase of detoxification is able to proceed. The first stage of detoxification requires B vitamins, vitamin C and E and carotenoids which can be found in colorful plant foods.

The second stage of liver detoxification requires specific amino acids and Sulphur.  Sulphur can be obtained from Brassica family vegetables, eggs, onion and garlic.

Keep your Fluids Up:

As the weather gets cooler, many people struggle to drink enough water and can unknowingly become dehydrated.  Keep in mind, it’s water that will also help to remove unwanted substances from your body as your kidneys need the water to filter your blood – your urine contains the waste products removed in this process.  If you find drinking cold water this time of year is difficult, consider warming it up and adding some fresh lemon.
