From boardroom to gym floor. Looking back on 10 years.
It's been ten years since the concept of Core Principles was born. Its inception was driven partly by ignorance, partly by frustration but mostly out of a desire to add meaning to my life!!
Having spent 20 years working in telco's and energy, I was coming to the realisation that corporate life was no longer for me. I was sick of complaining about how much I hated my job and refused to become one of those miserable people that complain about work all the time!
So, with much trepidation, I decided to look more creatively at how I could carve out a living doing something I enjoyed rather than something that increasingly lacked any meaning. I knew I wanted to create something from scratch and possibly work for myself…so with two kids in pre-school and no other income, I quit my job!
While contemplating my next move, I decided to get busy catching up with the hundreds of training sessions I had missed whilst working on my previous career. I was focused on rehabilitating a persistent lower back injury, which was coming along in leaps and bounds. I was amazed at how quickly I was improving given I was not sitting on my butt for eight hours a day, but actually lifting some weights and moving a whole lot more.
I was sharing this experience with my brother (who is a gym junkie), when he suggested I should become a PT, particularly given my natural interest in exercise, the body and injury rehabilitation, all of which could be coupled with my previous work experience in senior management. He seemed to think my "life" experience could be helpful to other stressed out adults who don’t necessarily want to hear an 18 year old tell them how they should live their life.
Needless to say, I swore at him and his ridiculous suggestion and questioned who would be silly enough to train with a 38 year old broken down ex-executive?! Other than that, I had a mortgage, two kids under the age of 5, bills piling up and wasn’t sure whether I had the courage for such a radical change of direction…'Surely it would just be easier to get onto Seek and keep doing what I’d always done…even if I knew I’d hate it!'
If I was really honest with myself, the thought of this opportunity scared me senseless. While the idea had merit, it required me to get real about changing my life. It meant taking a left turn rather than keeping my head down, sticking to what I knew and moving forward blindly.
It was crunch time!
So I decided to get qualified and start my own fitness business. I advertised and started with just one client. Over time, more clients came, my training and knowledge improved and I began to relax and truly enjoy running my own show and the many challenges that entails.
Within two years, works on a brand new ocation begin.
Fast forward ten years and the results of the transition are what you see today. A local fitness studio, run by locals, employing locals, assisting locals with their health and fitness needs!!
Open Day at Core Principles
I still love working with clients after 10 years, which now makes me a grandfather of the industry! I also get a tremendous amount of satisfaction from seeing our business continually evolve and grow. We love discovering amazing trainers who also want to make a difference to peoples lives. We love delivering on the needs of our clients who have also become our friends.
However, if there is one thing I couldn’t be prouder of, it is being told by a member that we have changed their life. You might be surprised how often we hear it, but these conversations are what keep us coming back day after day.
Meet Simone, she is amazing!
All of this makes my work so completely rewarding and more satisfying than the corporate life I left behind!
So, after ten years of hard work, it’s a massive thank you to all our members, staff, suppliers and fans out there that allow us to continue to do what we love!!
We look forward to delivering on your fitness needs and changing lives for another ten years!!
