Staying motivated through lock down 2.0
Now that lockdown 2.0 is upon us (and right in the middle of our long, cold winter), we might catch ourselves lacking the motivation to do much, especially exercising. Some of us will have kids home schooling and it might feel as though the lockdown, weather and time are all conspiring against us!
So how do we stay motivated and actually continue to exercise through this tough time?
Firstly, create a nice space where you can actually do your exercises (indoors preferably). The next key is to take a few minutes to come up with a plan for the next 6 weeks before we can properly go back out into the world (well, maybe not the world, but Australia).
The plan should include a few goals that you can work on. These could be as simple as exercising 3-5 days a week, to more elaborate goals such as being able to do 10 full push ups or any other exercise you haven’t been able to do for years. These goals are important and will help keep you on track.
Need a more specific approach? To everyone reading this… TELL US, YOUR TRAINERS what your goals are and we can incorporate them and make recommendations specific for you. Alternatively, you want to really focus on something during lockdown and have a couple of sessions 1-1 with one of us to kick-start that goal.
Another nifty way to keep motivated is to actually keep a journal of what the workout was, and how you felt during and particularly afterward the workout. Document your mood, energy levels and productivity and regularly look over these notes as a reminder as to why your exercising in the first place.
Summer bods are made in Winter!!!
This slogan is actually pretty accurate, but it’s also made in spring too (yay, more months of opportunity for exercising)! So, if you do envision being able to go down the beach over summer (assuming Covid-19 hasn’t entered its whatever wave) and you want to feel good and be proud of the work you put in over the hard winter months, this is the time to start! Plan now for that beautiful pina colada on the beach.
It’s a challenge. Welcome it and beat it.
Use this challenging time as your motivation. If there’s any angst about being stuck inside, take it out on some weights (lifting, not kicking!) to get even more of a tough workout. Your body and mind will thank you for it almost instantly… Ok maybe your body will take a few days before it thanks you, but your mind will instantly.
Luckily we can see 1 person outside for exercise, so grab a friend from the gym, work, social group, and organise some walks/runs or exercises at the park when its not pouring down rain. Or stay in the confines of your own home and grab your other half or kids and get them to do some with you. Just moved into the area? Grab any of us at the gym and we would be more than happy to help. I Promise.
Worried about it being cold?
Do your warmup inside with the heater on with a lot of layers, you’ll be wanting to take that jacket off within minutes!
The pain 2.0.
Remember that first week back after lockdown, if you hadn’t been keeping up with your exercises? It might have felt like being hit by a bus, so for the sake of it feeling more like a push bike than a bus, keep up the workouts. Again, your body will thank you.
The last thing you might want to do, is either buy or hire out some equipment, so you actually have a big variety of exercises available to keep it fun, but also so you can continue improving on where you are now.
