Strength Training For Children

We all want our kids to participate in sport because it is good for their physical and social development. But what about the risk of injuries such as concussion, joint dislocation, muscle sprains and all the other common sport injuries?

The only way to minimize risk of injuries is to participate in strength training. In this article, we will explore the benefits of strength training for adolescents compared to sports training alone.

1. Comprehensive Development

While sports are excellent for improving cardiovascular health and developing specific skills, strength training provides a more comprehensive approach to physical development. It targets muscle strength, bone density, flexibility, and overall body coordination, helping children build a solid foundation for athletic performance and everyday activities.

2. Enhanced Performance in Sports

Strength training can greatly enhance a child's performance in various sports. By building strength, children can generate more power, increase speed and agility, and improve their endurance. These physical attributes can give them a competitive edge and reduce the risk of injuries.

3. Injury Prevention

One of the key benefits of strength training for kids is injury prevention. By strengthening their muscles, tendons, and ligaments, children can develop better joint stability and reduce the likelihood of sports-related injuries. This is especially important during growth spurts when kids are more prone to imbalances and injuries.

4. Improved Bone Health

Building strong bones is crucial during childhood, as it helps prevent conditions like osteoporosis later in life. Strength training, including weight-bearing exercises, stimulates bone growth and increases bone density. This not only strengthens the skeletal system but also reduces the risk of fractures.

5. Positive Body Composition

Strength training promotes healthy body composition by increasing muscle mass and reducing body fat. It helps children develop leaner bodies, which can lead to improved self-esteem and body image. Furthermore, maintaining a healthy body weight reduces the risk of chronic diseases, such as obesity and diabetes.

6. Confidence and Self-esteem

Engaging in strength training empowers children, instilling confidence and boosting self-esteem. As they witness their progress and achievements, they gain a sense of pride in their abilities. For kids that are more introverted; doing 1 on 1 training with one of our highly qualified Personal Trainers is a great way to gradually improve not only kids' health & fitness but also their social skills.

7. Lifelong Habits

By introducing strength training at an early age, children develop a solid foundation for lifelong fitness habits. They learn the importance of regular exercise, setting goals, and the value of hard work and perseverance. These healthy habits can carry over into adulthood, promoting long-term health and well-being.

By assessing the overall mix and frequency of physical activities, our Personal Trainers will ensure your child has the appropriate rest and recovery periods between strength and sport sessions.
